- This is a slight change in topic, but does anyone know of a cell phone
- with a _integrated_ modem? I mean, you can clearly fit all the
- necessary circuitry into a PCMCIA card, so why not actually integrate
- it into the phone itself?
-
- You've already got a honkin' big battery on the phone (compared to the
- palmtop, anyway), and this way the modem would draw power from the
- phone's big battery rather than a couple of puny AA's. I bet there's a
- lot of circuit redundancy between the modem and the phone, which could
- be eliminated if you combine them. This would significantly reduce the
- additional power drain of the modem.
-
- If you integrated the modem into the cell phone, then you could just
- put a standard RS-232 port on the back of the phone, and you could
- connect it to ANYTHING that has an RS-232 port and some kind of
- terminal/emulator functionality.
-
- Imagine that - a single handheld device that you could connect to your
- palmtop, your PC, your Mac, your dumb terminal, or your wierd
- proprietary whatsit... anything with an RS-232 port! And with no power
- drain or software driver hassles! Just make the modem present a
- standard Hayes AT command set and it'll be compatible with just about
- everything.
-
- I find it hard to imagine that a product like this doesn't already
- exist... it would sure simplify a lot of the current problems (power
- drain on the palmtop, modem<->phone compatibility, card driver
- versions, and availability of PCMCIA slot).
-
- If anyone is familiar with such a device, or has reasons why it would
- be infeasible, I would welcome your responses.
-
- Cheers,
- Dennis
